The New R&R = Downtime in Order to Create UP time

Have you ever been burned out? If not, read this blog as a cautionary tale. If so, you know how it happens. Burnout is insidious, especially since it is often borne of success. What does this mean?  It means that you’re so good at something that you are repeatedly offered opportunities to contribute more. In the beginning, there’s an intoxicating adrenaline buzz about it. You’re achieving, you’re being acknowledged, you’re being welcomed.  It feels good, and so you ratchet it up and accelerate the cycle. Externally everything looks peachy. Then you start to get a crazed look in your eyes. Your spouse, partner, or dearest friends expresses concern. “Slow down,” they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” You begin to skip social activities, perhaps your love relationship starts to suffer. You’re too damn busy for these things, and now’s your moment, and it may never come again, so better grab that brass ring and rock ’n’ roll (the other R&R, btw).

But in your quiet times at the end of the day, when the adrenaline buzz wears off, you’re just plain tired. And are you even feeling fulfilled? Honestly, is this how you want to live? Even when you think you have it all under control—the business, the personal life, and so on—there’s always room for improvement. And sometimes improvement means slowing down.

I’ll give you guys some personal examples of burnout next week, but what I REALLY want to say to get this party started is,“Hey, why aren’t you at a barbecue somewhere having R&R, a beer and dripping corn on the cob down your chin?”  Building a business and a reputation as an expert is big and it’s exhausting.  So your downtime becomes not only precious.  It becomes the R&R fuel for your UP time.  You know, those moments of creative breakthrough and mind blowing problem solving.  Those moments where strategy comes out like a SYMPHONY.  So if your idea of a GREAT Labor Day weekend takes it literally (labor labor labor), rethink that a little bit.  AT LEAST take a few hours off and go for a great walk with a friend or join that BBQ down the block with your neighbors. Remember, REAL RELATIONSHIPS (another R&R) are important too, and the new R&R for entrepreneurs is Reactivate and Rejuvenate.

You can learn more about this and other strategies for success, along with a rock solid plan to get 1,000 new leads this month – and every month – at my Results Now Webinar.

    Hi Christine,
How would this apply in my case where I love my work so much that it’s not like work at all? For me, there’s nothing more enjoyable than learning new marketing tactics or strategies and then going and seeing how they work.
