Spirituality and Business, by Christine Comaford – The 7 Figure Business Builder

Monday, March 29th, 2010

I don’t want to claim that I’m a great example of spirituality, because I’m not. But I think I’m a decent example of the value of a quest. Having a spiritual practice (I was a Buddhist monk for 7 years and still practice Buddhism today) has helped me articulate my core values: a commitment to compassion and community as a fundamental part of any business plan.

In addition, my spiritual practice has helped me embrace another powerful core belief: People are fundamentally good. It’s true. I believe that everyone is basically a good person when you get down to it; some of us just get confused along the way.

The fact of the matter is, people are either coming from love or coming from fear. If  someone’s coming from love, I know they’ll want to help me and be supportive. If they’re coming from fear, a lot of funky emotions enter into the picture.

But when I hold onto the belief that people are fundamentally good, it’s easier to deal with them in a more compassionate, less reactive way. Remembering this helps me avoid taking everything personally when someone is unkind to me.  And in business, like in life, that’s just part of the deal sometimes.

A little disclaimer here: I’m not advocating that you follow my spiritual path, or any spiritual path, for that matter. But I do recommend embracing self-discovery. Find out  that matters most to you, then gather the tools that will help you check in with yourself when you’ve drifted away from your unshakeable core and lost sight of your most important goals.

So today, I want you to focus on connecting to your spiritual side. A fun and easy way to do this is by listening to your intuition. Intuition is about paying attention. And paying attention to that small, still voice within will lead you down the right path more times than not. So have fun with it!

This week, I spoke at Guerilla Business School, and over SIXTY business builders signed up for my 7 Figure Business Summit.  And while I AM an amazing business builder, I’m always a little suspicious that the connection is more than business – (no kidding, right).  Yes, it’s about the 145+ 7 figure businesses I’ve helped to build – but it’s ALSO about the spirituality that I KNOW and ACKNOWLEDGE is part of our life’s path, and thus, part of how (and why) we build our own businesses.

For myself, of course, I simply don’t believe you CAN rock your business unless you learn how to rock your life!

* If YOU are ready to work with me, I still have a little room at my 7 Figure Business SummitTHIS event is happening in only FOUR WEEKS.  4/30-5/2.  So hurry! You are worthy – no Fooling.

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Recently I was interviewed by Michael Ellsberg for his upcoming book on self-taught billionaires (no, I am not one!). He asked me, as many have before him, what prompted me to become a monk for 7 years. I gave my usual reply, which is that I found the pain and suffering of the world overwhelming. At the time, I felt that if I could meditate really, really hard, I’d somehow reduce some of the staggering human suffering I’d both witnessed and felt.

Today I “got” it though – the real, deep, subterranean reason why I took such serious vows at age 17. I was working with Lin Morel, one of my advisors, and a few hours after our working session it hit me.

The reason I took my vows 30 years ago, pledging my life to God and agreeing to great self-sacrifice, was because I knew I could succeed at it. You see, I know how to love God. I am a fool for God and happy to say it, absolutely.

Now here’s the dark underbelly: Yes, I knew I could succeed at being a monk. But I didn’t think I could succeed at anything else.

I’d grown up, as many of you who read this have, being told I was a disappointment. I’d heard many times that I wasn’t worth much and wouldn’t amount to much.  I bought into this lie for quite some time, albeit at some subconscious level… longer than I’d like to admit (!).

Eventually, I chose a different path and decided to break my vows as a monk.  By then I felt called to a different kind of freedom.  My creativity called me to build businesses and make millions and give away millions, which ultimately has led to my helping others do the same.

People come to me with all sorts of beliefs, and more often than not, at some level, they feel that they too aren’t worth much.  They can’t succeed, or worse, they’ll try and won’t succeed.

I’m writing today to say don’t buy in. Don’t believe it. You ARE worth something. You are worth A LOT. I’m a high school dropout who thought I could only love God.  I believed that I couldn’t really do anything else of value, and people certainly wouldn’t pay me for it.

If I can build multiple businesses, make millions, have a deeply fulfilling life — you can certainly do so too. Think of the most “worthy” or “valuable” person you know. Since we’re all made of the same stuff (God), then YOU are worth every bit as much as they are. You’re courageous, magnificent, valuable and MIGHTY.

I wish I knew this when I was a kid, a teen, a 20 something, a 30 something. It took me a long long time to get it.  But heck, one learns when they’re ready. And maybe I’m a slow learner. I am a fool, after all.

Powerlessness Sucks

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Well, I’ve been promising you some more personal insights, and today I deliver on that promise. I have a rockin’ team, believe me. Building my team took time and a lot of awareness. It won’t be a surprise to any of you that I deeply value every member of that team and mentor most of them through my BAI and BGB programs.

One of them, however, steadily declines all of my mentoring invitations. It’s not that she doesn’t want success; I’ve watched her run herself into the ground moving her business from just a few thousand in profit to a six-figure success this year. (Sound familiar?)  She’s often told me that we have different ideas of what success is. (Okay, that might be true. Mine is freedom, choice, abundance—while hers seems to be no sleep, no time with her family, endless worry…) (By the way, I share this WITH her permission – because she had a HUGE epiphany today.)

That epiphany came by way of a family dilemma. In the middle of a strategy call with the entire team, she disappeared. Later she shared that someone in her family had an emergency, and she also shared that she’s the “most together” member of her family so everyone always looks to her to fix things.  She ended our discussion with a beautiful, heartfelt, honest comment: “Powerlessness SUCKS.”

And everything clicked for me. This beloved member of my team doesn’t realize where she is and who she is. She is certainly not powerless. Listen closely gang, a LOT of this stuff goes into a “personal development” arena, and that is NOT who I am or what I do.  But being powerless your whole life, or part of your life, or in certain areas of your life, has NOTHING to do with your business. Hear me on this, friends: There are always going to be distractions. DO IT ANYWAY.

We at Mighty Ventures are all about CHOICE. Choice comes from following a *proven* formula to build your multi-million dollar business so you don’t have to waste time, money, energy and totally burn out on your path to financial freedom. Choice also comes from staying balanced, from remembering everything is an illusion. Everything. So be SURE to pick one that’s empowering, and while you’re at it, resign as General Manager of the Universe. Will everything get better? Nope. Will you suddenly solve all of the problems in your life? Nope. But what you WILL do is take control of your mental and emotional state – and please believe me, THAT will make a difference EVERYWHERE else.

I’m not saying you might not need some personal development—I am perpetually growing and learning how to be a better Christine. I’m just saying that while you spend the next ten years doing that, do THIS now. Read my book Rules for Renegades (or at least download and read the first free chapter here: http://rulesforrenegades.com/inside.html  ) and if you’re up for building a 7 Figure Business, go to http://www.7FigureBusinessFormula.com for some help.

You always have CHOICE. Choice ensures you always have POWER. Please remember this.

Today starts a once-a-week intention on my part to share a few personal anecdotes with you all.  One of my favorite stories is traveling from Paris to L.A. and meeting Keanu Reeves.  Tune in every Wednesday to follow the story.  Comments welcome!

Paris to L.A. and free first class upgrade with an empty seat next to me. I recline in the tan leather seat, settling in for the 16 hour flight. Drawling English followed by sing-song French issues forth from the P.A. system, reminding us to stow our carry-ons in the overhead bin or beneath the seat before us. The final passengers are boarding. A lanky guy dressed in black takes the seat in front of me. Like me he has a row to himself, but he’s different from the rest of us; he has no carry-on luggage. He travels light.

He reclines his seat and the flight attendants don’t even ask him to return it to its original upright position prior to take off. Peeking through the space between the seats I complete my assessment. Wow, is he gorgeous. Ten minutes into the air his shaggy black hair sways to the music on a CD player. Turning on my PC, I try to focus on the ton of work to finish before the battery dies.

That’s it for today!  Tune in for part two of the story next Wednesday!

To your HAPPY personal stories as well, Christine Comaford
