1. The Fab Four: I try to find outstanding people who fit into one or more of these 4 categories:

– Visionaries: They’re highly visible and articulate; they “see” the future of your company as well as new markets you should enter. And they’ll wow prospective clients and financiers.

– Leaders: This is your executive management; they make their mission everyone else’s. A great leader can inspire and motivate people to do anything.

– Implementers: These are the people who make things happen. They build the products/services and market and sell them.

– Infrastructure Builders/Supporters: They create the foundation, processes, and procedures to keep the company running smoothly and enable it to grow.

4 Secrets to Attract a ROCKIN’ Team – by Christine Comaford, The 7 Figure Business Builder

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Today I want to give you 4 secrets to hiring a team that totally ROCKS. Ready? Let’s get started…

As a former control freak I’ll admit that I can’t control people or situations or outcomes. But I can certainly influence them. So when I’m looking to put together a killer team, here’s what I do…

First, I gather a strong group of advisors or mentors. These need to be people whose insight and knowledge I trust implicitly.

Then I ask those with complimentary skill sets to assist in both the hiring of people and the monitoring of their initial work. But please note–I don’t make any of the new hires partners until we’ve worked together and solved multiple business challenges together.

Finally, if they don’t work out, I let them go quickly. It’s really that simple.

So how do you find the best people for the job? Tune in every day this week for my 4 steps to a rockin’ team…

3-Tips Building and KEEPING a Rockin’ Team

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Recently, I’ve been thinking about accountability a lot.  What is it that inspires teammates and vendors to WANT to be super accountable?  Of course, we can easily say that they get PAID to do a great job and that should be reason enough.  But if you’ve been in business for a while, you know that isn’t true.  Team members need to have an emotional investment in the product, the company, the idea, and yes, even in you.  So here’s three profoundly simple steps to consider when you’re building, keeping and inspiring your own rockin’ team.

 1. Make sure you communicate your needs and expectations clearly.  If one of your gang doesn’t know what your goals, priorities and deadlines are, it’s easy for them to miss the mark.  If they DO miss the mark, don’t hesitate to make your expectations clear – again, with specific goals, priorities and deadlines.  And be sure that YOU are accountable.  If you say you’re going to get them numbers or reports or geez, even pictures on the web, be sure to do it.  YOU set the tone for accountability, not anybody else.

2. Never praise and criticize in the same discussion.  It just mucks up your message.  At best, they’ll be confused.  At worst, they’ll be fearful.  And neither of those things inspires emotional investment.

3. Life equals the people you meet and the things you create together, so be sure that you’ve chosen the RIGHT people.  But once you HAVE that, once you’re team is rockin’ the results and showing up and knocking it out of the park, remember to express appreciation every day.  They need to know that you SEE their work and it matters.  THAT builds ties that bind.

More Beginner’s Advice – Team Building

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

At some point in your entrepreneurial biz building, you’ll find that you’re ready to build a team and move forward. What works best to accomplish great team building?  Should you hold interviews? Go hang out at the college and try to spot smart people – or even find interns to work for free? Should you expect your new team to work for profit sharing vs. hourly pay?

First, be sure to fully flesh out your business. What do you want it to be?  What is your end game; what are your conditions of satisfaction? Once you know what you want your biz to be like, sit down and decide what you want in terms of a staff and a team. You probably don’t want to do profit sharing for a while. Profit sharing can actually demoralize a team since profits take a while to get. But definitely pay for great performance as you’re able to, and be sure to offer up stock and other incentives where appropriate. And don’t be discouraged — recruiting and company building takes expertise and time. You may kiss a lot of frogs before finding a team to really wrap your arms around.
